TaLAI: Technostress and implications of GenAI on cognitive development
What happens inside a student's mind when AI is always one click away? This video explores a tension at the heart of GenAI in education: the same tool that can deepen understanding can also short-circuit it.
When students lean too much on AI, psychologists call it cognitive off-loading, essentially outsourcing thinking to a machine. Over time, this can weaken critical thinking, decouple writing from reasoning, lower intrinsic motivation, and flatten students' originality into polished but homogenised output. But used intentionally, generative AI can also serve as a powerful cognitive scaffold, helping students visualise complex ideas, test arguments, and deepen comprehension.
00:08 Intro
00:26 The risk when AI does the thinking
01:16 The opportunity: AI as cognitive scaffold
01:57 Strategies to keep the brain switched on
03:25 Keeping the humans at the center
04:03 Outro

The TaLAI project aims to explore methods and strategies for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning practices in higher education (HE) while adhering to ethical principles. The project consortium will develop a digital TaLAI Platform, create an online TaLAI Course, and formulate Policy Recommendations for ethical AI integration in HE.
Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or Erasmus+ National Agency for Higher Education (German Academic Exchange Service). Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
