TaLAI: Technostress and implications of GenAI on cognitive development

What happens inside a student's mind when AI is always one click away? This video explores a tension at the heart of GenAI in education: the same tool that can deepen understanding can also short-circuit it.
When students lean too much on AI, psychologists call it cognitive off-loading, essentially outsourcing thinking to a machine. Over time, this can weaken critical thinking, decouple writing from reasoning, lower intrinsic motivation, and flatten students' originality into polished but homogenised output. But used intentionally, generative AI can also serve as a powerful cognitive scaffold, helping students visualise complex ideas, test arguments, and deepen comprehension.

The TaLAI project aims to explore methods and strategies for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning practices in higher education (HE) while adhering to ethical principles. The project consortium will develop a digital TaLAI Platform, create an online TaLAI Course, and formulate Policy Recommendations for ethical AI integration in HE.
