E90 n54 335i Weekend Track Car - Story in description
Track day at Big Willow in beginners group. This 2007 335i was purchased as a CPO car back in 2010 and was primarily used for transportation until 2018 when my friends got me interested in taking it to the track. Before my first track day I installed a JB4, Koni FSD shocks, a intercooler, water meth injection and some Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires. The early track days were plagued with overheating and limp mode.
Limp mode fixed
After installing dual oil coolers, a larger radiator, a transmission cooler and a Dinan stage 2 tune the limp mode went away.

Looking for more power
In my quest for more power I switch from Dinan to a custom MHD tune. I upgraded the turbos to a stage 1 hybrid turbo.

Cracked Piston Ring Land
Excessive Detonation caused cracks on the piston ring land. Lessons learned… When test logging your tune, log a 4th gear pull and check for timing pulls. Some tunes will run clean in 3rd gear but will cause detonation in 4th. For a track car there should be little or no timing pulls in 4th gear. If you plan to run even 19 lbs of boost get a N20 map sensor to detect overboost. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElkE6W4JRr0
Blown Turbo
Lessons learned… Hybrid turbos may not be suitable for extended track use with over 2x the stock boost. The hybrids I used had a stock sized shaft with an oversized compressor wheel. The shaft failed after a few track days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDc3PfcCOQ0
