The Scarab 3D guitar. How it's made. Specs, interview and demo.
This Full Color Printed 3D Guitar is the first of its kind in the world. There have been other 3D Guitars but none like this one.
What's different here is that this guitar is printed using technology by Mimaki USA that lets the designer create the body in full color. Prior to using Mimaki's technology, a 3D printed guitar required many hours of painstakingly difficult sanding, masking, and painting if the designer wanted anything other than a simple white guitar.
This guitar came to be as the result of a project involving Olaf Deigel of Odd Guitars. Olaf has been making 3D printed electric guitars since 2011. As Professor of Additive Manufacturing at Auckland University Olaf is a wealth of knowledge and experience regarding this technology.
He saw Mimaki's unique full-color 3D printing technology and approached Josh Hope who at the time was Senior Manager for Mimaki's Engineering and 3D Development Team. With the assistance of Mimaki Application Specialist Jamie Martinez, they created the world's first functional Full-Color 3D Printed Electric Guitar.
Many of you probably don't realize it but I also work for Mimaki USA as Regional Manager for their Canadian Operation. Josh Hope and I have been friends and colleagues for a number of years. When Josh and his team began working on this project he immediately reached out to me to see if I would be interested to demo the final product. How lucky am I?
So in this video, we look at the specs of the guitar, talk to the folks who designed and created it and finally listen to an original piece I wrote specifically to showcase the guitar. I am very honored to have been able to take part in this project. This guitar, The Scarab ST, is not only a fine instrument but is without a doubt the coolest and most unique instrument I have ever played. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
