Old chessboard remake restoration

This time I tried to do some woodworking- my wife asked me to make a gift for her dad.
This chessboard was made ca 50 years ago by my father-in-law´s grandfather, my wife learnt to play chess with this chess set when she was young. After some time the box got broken, they used only the chessmen...

NOW, this is the time to give this family treasure a new life!

I wanted to retain as many parts of the original chessboard as possible- the main board and the lock. Great grandfather just painted the squares, I made them from ash tree and walnut tree venner. Me and my wife decided to keep the chessmen in their original state, the only thing left untouched :)

Before this chcessboard, I thought working with wood will be much easier than with metal. I was wrong! :D
