Sulfonamides are the derivatives of para-amino benzene sulfonamide also known as sulfanilamide. The sulfonamide drugs were the first effective chemotherapeutic agents, to be employed systemically, for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections, in humans. The sulfonamides are bacteriostatic antibiotics, with a wide spectrum action, against most gram-positive bacteria, and many gram-negative organisms.
Sulfonamides structure main consist of three main parts that are responsible for SAR of sulfonamide antibiotics:
1. Benzene Ring
2. Amino group at 4 position
3. Sulfonyl group
