Spain has begun installing a 500-meter (1,640-foot) floating sea barrier along the maritime border between Ceuta and Morocco, following an unprecedented migrant surge that authorities say left at least 67 people dead.

Video footage shows boats towing and installing the floating barrier, patrol vessels monitoring the coastline, migrants returning to Morocco through the land border, and emergency responders rescuing a person from the water before the barrier was fully deployed.

According to Spanish authorities, around 50,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta by land and sea during the surge that began on July 30, making it one of the largest migration events ever recorded at the European Union's only land borders with Africa. Officials say more than 48,000 people returned to Morocco within 48 hours, while authorities reported that dozens of people died from drowning or crush incidents during the crossing attempts.

The new pneumatic barrier is designed to extend above and below the water's surface while allowing Civil Guard patrol boats to continue operating through a designated channel.
