How to Read the Ball EARLY to Improve your Footwork/positioning (4 DRILLS)

This is a special video as it is in my opinion the most important factor in tennis to being a great tennis player. The crazy thing is it’s not even talked about enough. When people think about what the most important thing in tennis is people will typically say footwork and other things that you hear about all the time. What is the most important thing in tennis? It’s actually reading the incoming ball early and reading it well. What does that mean exactly? Have you ever heard of “watch the ball?” Well, what does that actually mean? It means watching the height, spin, depth, direction and speed of the incoming ball. Most players have a lot of trouble reading the ball early. Now why is it important to know ASAP where the ball is? Well, because if you don’t know where it is or you misjudge the ball then you can’t move to it to get into position. essentially the sooner you know where the ball is the sooner you can react and get in position. I agree that being in position is important of course. But to get in position you have to know where the ball is going right? Imagine if you could read the ball 2 seconds earlier each time it comes to you. You would have so much time. So many players don’t know where the ball is going until about the time the ball bounces on their side. That’s too late! We should be able to know where the ball is going before the ball even crosses to our side of the net. Misjudging the ball is one of the most common issues around the world at most levels. Oh and did I mention it’s only the most important part of tennis because how you send the ball is based on how you received it. However we always hear people talk about technique. Well, if your not in position to hit the ball then you can’t have that technique. So it all starts with getting in position to hit the ball and to get in position you must know where the ball is going sooner rather then later. I find that in many cases footwork issues are a direct result of misjudging the ball. Once players can pick up the ball earlier they then improve in all other aspects. Reading the ball late will effect your footwork, balance, decision making, shot selection and much more. It affects everything! This is because receiving the ball is the first part of the cycle of getting into position. You can’t know where to hit the call to or how to move to the ball or anything until you know where it’s going. You wanna get better at tennis? Then you need to work on reading the ball better!
