Don't Fence Me In (Patti Shaughnessy) | DANCING THE LAND - ET DANSE LA TERRE

This film is a musing on my life and the connection to the land I inherited from a beloved uncle. Notions of my Nishnaabeg and Irish identities are interwoven in the image and soundtrack. This land “settled” and cultivated by my Irish ancestors was also stolen from my Nishnaabeg ancestors. An instrumental version of the Cole Porter song, Don’t Fence Me In, speaks to the reclamation of the geographic space I now inhabit, land I’ve been dancing walking, falling, and rolling on since I was a child.

Patti Shaughnessy works locally, nationally, and internationally as a curator, director, performer, and artistic producer. Patti is Mchi Saagig Nishnaabe from Curve Lake First Nation #35, and a descendent of Irish settlers who found home in the Peterborough region circa 1825. At her home in Douro, ON, she grows food, flowers and herbs.

Ce film est une réflexion sur ma vie et les liens que j’entretiens avec la terre léguée par mon oncle bien-aimé. Des pans de mon identité nishnaabeg et irlandaise s’imbriquent dans les images et la trame sonore. La terre, sur laquelle mes ancêtres irlandais se sont « établis », a été volée à mes ancêtres nishnaabeg. Cette version instrumentale de la chanson Don’t Fence Me In de Cole Porter évoque ma réconciliation avec la terre, avec cette terre que j’ai faite mienne et sur laquelle j’ai dansé, marché, trébuché et roulé depuis mon enfance.

Patti Shaughnessy œuvre sur la scène locale, nationale et internationale comme organisatrice, metteure en scène, interprète et productrice artistique. Descendante de pionniers irlandais installés dans la région de Peterborough depuis 1825, Patti Shaughnessy est membre de la communauté Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg de la Première Nation de Curve Lake no 35. Dans sa maison de Douro, en Ontario, elle cultive des légumes, des fleurs et des fines herbes.
