Koko Knows She's a "Gorilla"
Koko liked to look at books and magazines (which she sometimes held upside down). She would point out photos or illustrations she liked and would often comment about what she saw. In these examples, she then comments on herself! Koko is showing her understanding of different animals and also demonstrating that she is aware of her own identity as a gorilla. Koko’s self-awareness raises important questions about the legal status of gorillas and all great apes.
