Two cold cases solved by DNA: Mandy Stavik & Lisa Ziegert || True Crime Recaps Podcast

Today's episode explores two cold cases that were solved decades later.

First, Amy takes us through the cold case of Mandy Stavik, who disappeared while jogging the day after Thanksgiving in 1989. Two days later, her body was found in a nearby river. DNA was collected from Mandy's body as well as over 30 men from the community, but there was never a match. In 2013, two local moms, who were former classmates of Mandy, went to the police with a new suspect, the predatory Timothy Bass, who lived along Mandy's jogging path. Timothy becomes suspect number 1, but he wasn't going to give up his DNA so easily.

In the second part of the podcast, Chris tells the story of Lisa Ziegert, who disappeared in the spring of 1992. After not showing up to work as a teaching assistant, her car and belongings were discovered at the gift shop where she worked, and within days, her murdered body was found. Ten years later, the prime suspect became Gary Schara, but he refused to give up his DNA. The case remained cold until 2016 and thanks to a new technology called DNA Phenotyping, the police were closer to finding Lisa's killer. The new technology revealed that Lisa's murderer was a caucasian man with dark hair and dark eyes and all evidence led back to Gary. Gary confessed and was sentenced to life in prison.
