An alternative story, Legend of the White Snake, was not considered in this video. It’s a famous Chinese myth, also known as Madame White Snake (白夫人の妖恋) in Japan. The narratives are centered around the serpent herself, as opposed to the servant who consumed the white snake in Grimm’s fairytale. I will be drawing the serpent when I cover Madame White Snake in a future video.

Primal instincts & the subconscious. Key XIII of the Major Arcana (Death.) In Christianity, the serpent symbolizes original sin, leading to desire: desire of happiness, success, love, possessions, eternal life. The snake zodiac symbolizes intuition and wisdom.

Key VIII, Strength. The “snake” is the “beast”, though drawn as a lion on most cards, they are the same. Neither malevolent or benign, it holds one of the keys for Scorpio. A return to nature, away from human artifice of the chariot (VII). The form of the serpent derives from a force of this nature, because it spirals and coils as it moves (a physical manifestation.) Man’s ignorant misuse of this force caused the ideas of evil, temptation, antagonism to God to be linked to the snake. Ill-directed, it causes all human misery; but this same energy leads humanity towards liberation.
