Pomodoro s*cks(kinda) ....Here's a Better Alternative - Flowtime

There! I said it, I think Pomodoro s*cks. It makes studying feel like a chore and takes out the biggest incentive we can give our brain with any task - entering the "flow" state.

08:50 So what is the alternative? Flowtime!

I've tried using the Pomodoro technique quite a lot of times, but it has never worked for me and I was wondering why... After a bit of digging, I realized that it doesn't work for me because it doesn't consider the fact that our brains are not wired like computers. We should rest when we feel like resting and keep working if we're enjoying it - which is exactly NOT how Pomodoro works.

Pomodoro technique was first described by Fransesco Cirillo who used a tomato-shaped timer(hence the name) to time his study sessions. He would break down his study sessions into 25 min chunks and have frequent short breaks in between. So if you follow the Pomodoro technique, you'd study/work for 25 mins, take a 5 mins break and then do another session followed by a break and another session and break and another session followed by a longer(~30mins) break. Although this sounds very solid in theory, neither do our brains have a set timer nor can we start studying very efficiently right after we come back from a break.

The better alternative and the one that I've always relied on is "FLOWTIME". Flowtime works on the concept of allowing your brain to enter flow, therefore making your brain actually like doing that task. The most basic principle of Flowtime is to Unitask - where you just do ONE task at a time and when you feel tired, you take a break and then you come back and work till you feel tired again and repeat. Maintain a table with your session start and end times and break times so you can track your sessions and see which task fits best for that part of the day.

Hope this helps!🙌🏼
