-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Kiran Morjaria of @Another Indian Doctor is a GP trainee in the UK. Since I'm very interested in GP practice and that is probably the residency I'll be choosing, his video about his income caught my interest.

Dr. Kiran works for the UK's National Health Service(NHS) which is funded by the taxpayer through the Govt. To make it less complicated, let's just say it's funded and controlled by the UK Govt. Since 1948, most hospitals in the UK are NHS funded and healthcare is either free or heavily subsidized for all UK citizens (and also special category of people like healthcare workers). Private hospitals are very few in number and tend to be quite expensive and hence out of reach for most of the common folk.

NHS salaries are based on grades. Since Dr. Kiran is a first-year specialist trainee, he gets the grade pay of ST1, which is around £38,700 basic pay plus extras and it increases almost every year as he advances in his training.

In very stark contrast, doctors in training(residency) in India are paid peanuts. We do get a "salary" of around Rs.4 lakh per year which is around £4000 per year, but most places have an "Academic fee" of at least 4 to 5 lakhs per year, sometimes up to 50 lakhs or £50,000 a year. So, if you are a junior doctor in training in India, you not only make no money, you will even have to dig up money from your own pockets! And imagine doing this for 3 to 6 years!

Such nice financial independence in our late 20s and early 30s when our friends are getting married, buying homes and settling down!

Don't get me wrong, we do get a decent salary AFTER training, but why we have to be penniless/in debt when we are in training and working hundred plus hours per week in the hospital is beyond me.

Anyways, I hope you guys like this video, make sure you check out @Another Indian Doctor . He has a cool channel!

Have a great day!
