In the heart of the Peloponnese there is a small #Arcadian village that exudes authenticity and rare #beauty.
We are located in the province of #Gortynia in the prefecture of Arcadia. #Karytena is built on the top of a hill around the #medieval castle. It is located in the area of the ancient city of #Vrenthis.

A settlement that is particularly #distinguished for the medieval character given to it by the houses, the castle and the #Byzantine rhythm churches. It has been recognized as a traditional settlement, and has about 230 permanent #residents. Its name is of #Frankish origin and probably derived from the female name #Caretene which was widespread in #Burgundy in the Middle Ages. It lies 208 km or 2.5 hours from #Athens via #Megalopolis and 52 km from #Tripoli.

It is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, during the Frankish rule in Greece and was the capital of one of the #Baronies of the #Franks. At that time, the castle was built on the ruins of ancient #Acropolis. Later, Karytena passed into the control of #Morea's #Despotate, until the #Ottomans captured it and was liberated by the Greeks with the #revolution of 1821.

This trip to Karytena promises an unforgettable experience that combines the rich history, the wild natural world and the traditional #gastronomy of Arcadia.

The main attraction is its castle, built on top of the hill above the settlement. It stands imposing and vigorous, while maintaining the colors of a medieval castle - state. It offers a #magical #journey back in time through #legends and traditions.
