Engineering is an awesome profession. I mean I got my bachelors and masters in civil engineering; I love this stuff. But not everyone is made for engineering, even people that have engineering degrees are not necessarily cut out for being in the actual industry. I always think it's very important to understand what interests you and what keeps you engaged and happy; that should trump and dictate what kind of career you choose to pursue and be in.
1. Problem Solving
Engineers need to be inherent problem solvers. The whole purpose of engineering is to use math and science to help societies problems. So say you are a structural engineer, your job is to make the architect or designer's wishes come true and buildable. Is that the kind of challenge you want?
2. Enjoyment of Engineering
Because the concepts of engineering are relatively dry and niche, you have to really enjoy engineering and the content within or you will have a relatively unhappy engineering career. There's nothing wrong with being disinterested in engineering material, however it makes it really difficult to be a great engineer if your heart and enjoyment really isnt in it.
3. Hard Workers
Engineers are hard workers. In addition to the problems being difficult, it is almost expected that engineers work more than the average person; after all we have an above average degree. Granted you can have varying levels of work-life balance in engineering; but from what I have seen, the more exciting careers put in well over 50 hours per week as engineers.
4. Logical
Engineers are logical beings and it makes sense. We have spent our lives calculating and finding solutions through systems. We conduct our lives in similar ways.
5. Team/Business Mindset
What separates a regular engineer from a partner/manager of an engineering firm is the engineer's ability to have interpersonal leadership skills and a business acumen that may not go very well with the typical engineer stereotype of the logical, unempathetic being. So keep that in mind as you move in your engineering career; the intangibles may become more important than your technical skills.
