In this animated video, Berklee Online instructor Tim Huling focuses on harmony in film music and in particular how harmonic choices can be used to supplement style. Huling explains how the setting and time period of the film often dictates the musical style. Harmonic language is a component of genre and style, like instrumentation, melodic form, and rhythmic vocabulary. Film music isn’t a style, as much as it is a context. For example, a film set in Dublin in the nineteenth century would likely use Irish fiddle music as a major influence in the score. Once the style and mood are set, the harmonic content can be bent, tweaked, and modified to serve the film's needs.
