"With Whom Must I Fight?" — Arjun's Last Confident Words | Bhagavad Gita Ch1 V22
Arjun asked Krishna to drive to the middle of the battlefield. He wanted to see the enemy — study their positions, assess matchups, plan his war. He called them "those eager to fight." He asked "with whom must I fight?"
He still thought this was reconnaissance. He was about to learn otherwise.
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1, Verse 22 — in Sanskrit, Hindi, and English.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📖 THE VERSE (Shloka 1.22)
यावदेतान्निरीक्षेऽहं योद्धुकामानवस्थितान् ।
कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन्रणसमुद्यमे ॥२२॥
Translation:
"So that I may observe those who stand here eager to fight — with whom I must contend in this great battle."
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔍 THE LAST MOMENT OF CERTAINTY
This verse completes Arjun's command from V1.21. Together they form one sentence:
V1.21: "O Achyut, place my chariot between the two armies —"
V1.22: "— so that I may see those eager to fight, with whom I must contend."
Two things reveal who Arjun is at this moment:
YODDHU-KAMAN (योद्धुकामान्) — "those desirous of fighting." He calls the opposing army "eager." He sees them as willing combatants who chose to be here. He doesn't yet see them as Bhishma — who's fighting out of loyalty to a throne he doesn't believe in. Or Dronacharya — who's here because his livelihood depends on the Kauravs. Or Karna — who's fighting to prove he belongs. Arjun sees an army of willing enemies. In four verses, he'll see an army of trapped relatives.
KAIR MAYA SAHA YODDHAVYAM (कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यम्) — "with whom must I fight?" The word "must" carries duty. He's not asking IF he should fight. He's asking WHO. Strategy, not philosophy. He hasn't reached the moral crisis yet. That's still four verses away.
This is the last verse where Arjun sounds like a general. From V1.26 onward, he sounds like a man watching his world fall apart.

📐 WHAT COMES NEXT
V1.23 — Arjun wants to see who came to serve Duryodhan
V1.24 — Krishna drives to the middle (exactly where Arjun asked)
V1.25 — Krishna says: "Behold these Kurus"
V1.26 — Arjun sees fathers, grandfathers, teachers, sons, friends
V1.28 — "My limbs are failing, my mouth is parching..."
V1.30 — "Gandiva slips from my hand..."
The question "with whom must I fight?" becomes "how can I fight my own family?" in six verses. The entire Gita exists because Arjun asked to see.
