"My Own People." The Word That Changed Everything. | Bhagavad Gita Ch1 V28

Five verses ago, Arjun called the enemy "evil-minded sycophants." Now he calls them "my own people." One word — स्वजनम् — and the greatest warrior alive starts falling apart.

📖 THE VERSE (Shloka 1.28)

अर्जुन उवाच ।
दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम् ।
सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि मुखं च परिशुष्यति ॥२८॥

Translation:
"Arjun said: O Krishna, seeing my own people gathered here, eager to fight, my limbs are giving way and my mouth is drying up."

🔍 THE WORD SHIFT

This verse is built on one word: स्वजनम् — svajanam — my own people.

In V1.23, Arjun called the same army "दुर्बुद्धि Duryodhan's sycophants" — evil-minded accomplices who chose to serve injustice.

In V1.28, those same people become "स्वजनम्" — my own people.

Same humans. Different word. The shift happened in five verses of silence — V1.24 (Krishna drove to the middle), V1.25 ("behold these Kauravs"), V1.26 (he saw fathers, grandfathers, teachers), V1.27 (compassion overwhelmed him).

The word change IS the collapse. When "the enemy" becomes "my people," the warrior's body knows the fight is over before his mind admits it.

SIDANTI MAMA GATRANI (सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि) — "my limbs are sinking/failing." The root सद् means to sink, to collapse downward. His body is doing what his heart already did in V1.27 — sinking. The warrior who raised Gandiva in V1.20 can barely hold it now.

MUKHAM CHA PARISHUSHYATI (मुखं च परिशुष्यति) — "my mouth is thoroughly drying up." परि intensifies — this isn't mild dryness. This is the body shutting down speech. The man who commanded God in V1.21 can barely form words now.

HOW HE ADDRESSES KRISHNA — In V1.21 he called Krishna "Achyut" (the infallible). In V1.24 Sanjay called him "Hrishikesh" (master of senses). Now Arjun just says "Krishna." No epithet. No title. Just the name of his friend. The formality is gone because the commander is gone. What's left is a man who needs help.
