This week I switch between house restoration and garden upgrades at my Sicily villa. Indoors, I rehang the freshly primed white internal doors, then revive the original mortise locks and door handles, wire brush, WD-40, wire wool, a touch of grease and refit everything so they latch and lock like new. I repaired the kitchen wall where the drain elbow came through: cut a stone block to shape, wet the area, set it with mortar, and render it smooth.

Outside on the rear garden terrace, I dig a trench to extend the orange ducting under the wall and through the concrete footing—future-proofing routes for water pipes and power between the water well, terrace outbuilding and the (future) underground water tank before backfilling. In the front garden, I set a 2.5m wooden post (steel pins + anchors) and concrete it in, then backfill neatly so it disappears.

Garden care: water the citrus trees, lightly prune the fig and remove remaining fruit to save moisture (it hasn’t rained in 2+ months and I’m still hauling water from the public tap).
