Julia Hartley-Brewer clashes with teacher over who is best placed to advise on school returns

Julia Hartley-Brewer has argued with an English teacher over when primary schools should return amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Research suggests many parents are still not confident about sending their children back to school - with higher income families more keen for a return to the classroom than lower income families.

A study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies is warning it runs the risk of leaving vulnerable children even further behind.

Chris McGovern from the Campaign for Real Education told Julia on talkRADIO most teachers are already working hard to ensure children aren't missing out - but he feels they're being let down by the attitude of the Unions: "The voice of the unions is a voice of support for the privileged.

"What they're saying is we're going to keep the schools closed. We quite like it like this. The posh kids in their private schools get a full load of online lessons. The poor kids who have got no supportive parents are getting nothing.

"It's remarkable the unions are supporting this great division."

Speaking to English teacher Francis Gilbert, Julia asked him if he thinks the "World Health Organisation chief scientists might know more than the rest of us?"

Mr Gilbert replied: "I think the British doctors are in the best place to give the best advice."
