Endangered Sturgeon Release Back to the Wild

This clip captures the moment of releasing a large, endangered sturgeon—likely a Yangtze sturgeon—back into its natural river habitat. These fish are bred in captivity as part of conservation programs to rebuild wild populations.
Before release, the fish are kept in oxygenated tanks to reduce stress. Here, handlers carefully lift the sturgeon to guide it back into the water, a critical step in the fight to save this “living fossil.” Yangtze sturgeons have lived on Earth for over 140 million years, but pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss have pushed them to the brink of extinction.
This release is part of a broader effort to restore their populations. By reintroducing captive-bred individuals, scientists hope to rebuild self-sustaining wild groups and prevent the species from disappearing forever. The fish’s size and distinctive scuted body are clear signs of its status as one of the Yangtze River’s most iconic protected species.
