How Premium Monkey King Tea Leaves Are Pressed

This clip shows the meticulous hand-pressing step that makes Taiping Houkui tea one of the most labor-intensive teas in the world. Unlike most green teas that are rolled or twisted, Houkui leaves are pressed flat and straight, giving them their iconic “two knives with one flag” shape.
The workers arrange each leaf by hand, laying them out neatly before they go through the pressing machine. The rollers gently squeeze the leaves into their signature flat form, locking in their shape while preserving the delicate green color and fresh, grassy flavor. Every leaf has to be handled carefully to avoid breaking the tender buds and stems, which is why this process still relies on skilled hands, even in modern factories.
This step isn’t just for looks—pressing the leaves slows down oxidation and helps them dry evenly, preserving the bright, sweet taste that makes Houkui so prized. Watching the leaves glide into the machine and come out perfectly aligned is oddly satisfying, showing just how much care goes into every single cup of this premium tea.
