Britain Said Aboriginal Laws Didn't Count. Then This Happened #shorts #australianhistory #legal

Before 1788, Australia had over 500 distinct legal systems called Lore. For 60,000+ years, Aboriginal nations governed land, marriage, disputes, and punishment without jails or written law.

Then in 1836, British courts ruled Aboriginal Lore had no standing. The Jack Congo Murrell case set a precedent that lasted 204 years.

This changed in 1992. The Mabo decision recognised Native Title and that Lore had survived. Today, some Australian courts consider traditional law in sentencing.

This is the story of two legal systems. One continent. One was denied for two centuries.
