Castle Season 9 AU. Chasing Ghosts

Set after the events of 8x22 Crossfire and the Castle & Beckett Faded AU video.

Castle wakes up in hospital after being in critical condition and is told both Caleb Brown and his Wife Kate Beckett died while in hospital.

3 months later.
Castle's now writing serious literature after killing off Nikki in his last Nikki Heat novel. Still grieving the loss of Kate he finds it diffcult to cope and decides to help Ryan and Esposito on a new case of random murders to keep his mind occupied.

While investigating, Ryan and Esposito come across some cctv evidence only to find that the killer looks a lot like (now dead) Caleb Brown. Alerting Castle to what they found, Castle is in disbelief and decides he has to find out for sure.

When Castle sees Caleb with his own eyes he becomes angry,confused and doesn't understand what's going on. He begins to wonder if what he was told when he woke up in the hospital was actually true.

Castle becomes convinced Beckett is still alive much to the disbelief of Ryan, Espo and his family. With everyone believing he's chasing ghosts he decides to look for answers.

Castle taking the investigation into his own hands finds the hospital records only to discover they look forged and the doctor who told him they were dead wasn't actually an employee at the hospital and disappeared without a trace.

They finally decide to exhume Beckett's grave only to find her body isn't there.

Castle still upset and confused and finding it all hard to take in, receives a phone call from Mr Smith.

Smith tells Castle Caleb escaped from the hospital shortly after him and Beckett were shot and was looking for payback and on a crazy hellbent mission to kill Kate.

With Beckett still getting over being shot and unable to go against Caleb or anymore corrupt CIA, Smith tells Beckett the best thing is to go on the run as they will kill her. Beckett still distraught from being shot and seeing Castle seriously hurt tells him goodbye while he's still unconscious. With the help of Rita & her resources she changes her identity and goes into hiding.

Smith confirms on the phone that Beckett's still alive and on the run and tells Castle that Caleb has been killing people because he's after information that could lead to her whereabouts.

Castle continues his hunt for Beckett while Ryan and Espo try to take down Caleb and stop him from killing anymore people or even getting to Beckett first.

Castle's investigation brings him across an old acquaintance who's also in trouble with the same people. Thief and recovery expert Serena Kay. After being sent on a recovery mission for a flash-drive she finds she's caught in the middle of huge fight and race for some very vital information.

Could the flash-drive be the key to Castle reuniting with Beckett once and for all?
