Texas Doctor Sentenced to 10 Years for $118M Medical Fraud

Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, a 68-year-old Texas rheumatologist, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for orchestrating a massive $118 million health care fraud scheme.

He falsely diagnosed hundreds of healthy patients with chronic illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, subjecting them to harmful and unnecessary treatments such as chemotherapy and infusions—all to enrich himself.

Over two decades, Zamora-Quezada fabricated medical records, manipulated staff, and billed insurers including Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and Blue Cross Blue Shield for services patients never needed. His fraudulent activities funded a luxurious lifestyle of private jets, luxury cars, and real estate in the U.S. and Mexico.
During his trial, victims and former employees testified to the emotional, physical, and financial devastation caused by his lies. Patients suffered severe side effects, some lifelong while employees described a toxic work culture driven by fear and threats tied to their immigration status.
Zamora-Quezada was convicted on multiple counts, including health care fraud and obstruction of justice. He was also ordered to forfeit over $28 million in assets. Federal authorities, including the FBI and HHS-OIG, emphasized the profound betrayal of trust and the importance of holding corrupt medical professionals accountable.
