間宮芳生は日本を代表する作曲家の一人である。
特にその創作は世界中の民謡を研究し、その根底に流れる市井の人々の血潮を浮かび上がらせるという、独特の視座に到達したと言ってもいい。
西洋の前衛と民謡研究の間に、またPopsのイディオムからお経までを同じ音楽とみなして、差別なく等価に扱ってみせたことは、世界中に偉業として誇るべきものであろう。
間宮芳生は1929年に北海道に生まれ、青森県に育つ。その後東京音楽学校に進むまで全くの独学で作曲を学び、大学入学後はじめて池内友次郎に師事した。
そしてこういった民族主義と、左翼主義に立脚した作曲集団「山羊の会」に加わり、様々な作品を発表していった。
ことに合唱分野でライフワークとした「合唱のためのコンポジション」は死の直前まで最新の曲の作曲に意欲を燃やしていたとも言われ、彼の人生そのものであったとも言える作品である。
その他にも、管弦楽曲、室内楽曲、独奏曲などあらゆるジャンルで重要な作品を残し、また吹奏楽曲においても今の日本の風潮とは違う、素晴らしい傑作を多く書いたことはもっと評価されて良いと言えるだろう。
今回ご紹介するこの曲は、子供のためのピアノ曲集として書かれたものだが、彼の創作の原点を余すところなく盛り込んだ傑作であると言って良い。
民謡、Pops、現代的手法のいずれもが等価で出現する素晴らしい曲集であり、多くのピアノ教室で教えるべき優れた曲集であると言える。
全曲をまとめた音源がなかなか見当たらないので、今回全曲のデータ化を行ってみた。
これを機に、再評価が進んでほしい。
2024年の年末、間宮芳生は95年の生涯を閉じた。

Michio Mamiya is one of Japan’s most prominent composers.
His creative work is particularly notable for its deep exploration of folk songs from around the world, arriving at a unique perspective that brings to light the lifeblood of ordinary people flowing beneath these songs.
He bridged the gap between Western avant-garde music and folk song studies, treating everything from pop idioms to Buddhist chants as equal forms of music, handling them without discrimination or hierarchy. This monumental achievement is something Japan can proudly present to the world.
Michio Mamiya was born in Hokkaido in 1929 and raised in Aomori Prefecture. He studied composition entirely on his own until he entered the Tokyo Music School, where he studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi for the first time.
He later joined Yagi no Kai (The Goat Society), a group of composers rooted in nationalism and leftist ideologies, and released various works.
Among his compositions, his Composition for Chorus series stands out as his life’s work. It is said that he remained passionate about composing new pieces for the series until just before his death, making it a true reflection of his life.
In addition to choral works, Mamiya left significant contributions in orchestral music, chamber music, and solo compositions. His wind band works, which stand apart from contemporary trends in Japanese wind music, contain many brilliant masterpieces that deserve greater recognition.
The piece introduced here is a collection of piano pieces for children. It can be considered a masterpiece that fully embodies the essence of his creativity. This collection seamlessly integrates folk music, pop music, and contemporary techniques, making it an outstanding set of pieces that should be taught at many piano schools.
Since it is difficult to find a complete recording of this work, we have taken the opportunity to digitize the entire collection. We hope this will lead to a renewed appreciation of Mamiya’s music.
At the end of 2024, Michio Mamiya passed away at the age of 95.
