Sweet Sorghum "Molasses" Video

Cooking Sweet Sorghum with Family and friends on top of Crowley`s Ridge in a small community in N. E. Arkansas. We cook our sorghum in a Batch pan instead of a Continuous Flow pan. The batch pan requires alot less work and the knowledge that you need to run a continuous flow pan. On the down side you don`t get the yield that a continuous flow can offer. Our pan holds around 50 gallons of juice. Once we light the fire It takes around 4 to 4 1/2 hours to cook off 5 to 7 gallons of syrup. We like to plant Honey Drip and Dale.

The past 2 years the sugar cane aphid hit us hard like so many others . Sivanto was the trick @ 5 oz per acre . For grass and weeds we have always only cultivated, but if it rained enough to keep us out of the field the grass would get out of control. Last year we used " Duel " when we planted, but you have to use Concept treated seed. It worked great.
Anyone interested in making sorghum can join our group, The "NSSPPA" National Sweet Sorghum Producers Processors Association. We have a convention once a year in Pigeon Forge , TN. There is a abundant of knowledge at the meeting. Well worth going to. Also if your interested in Cane mills there is a book written by Don Dean called "The American Cane Mill". The book has an enormous amount of information on many different mills.
