Shay Locomotive Closeup

Large Shay Locomotive as it reaches Bald Knob... almost the highest peak in WV. It's got a cool 14 wheel drive that allows it climb slopes 4 times steeper than modern engines... but it's slow. Max speed is 12 mph... steep climbs are 4 to 7 mph. This is a close-up view of the extreme pistons and linkages needed to drive all the wheels.
