Police officers detained several dozen people who took part in an unsanctioned rally in Minsk on Tuesday. The protesters claimed to support opposition politicians that have been banned from the presidential race.

The supporters of opposition politicians Victor Babaryko and Valery Tsepkalo gathered in the center of Minsk and walked along Independence Avenue.

Protests also took place in Brest, Grodno, Gomel, Mogilev and other towns.

Earlier in June, opposition candidate Viktor Babaryko was arrested on tax evasion and money laundering allegations. His supporters say the detention is politically motivated.

The presidential election in Belarus is set to take place on August 9. The incumbent leader Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a sixth term in office and has registered as a candidate.
