Salt Lake City's Trolley Empire - Trolley Square
Salt Lake's trolley system opened in 1873, and by 1910 it was one of Americas greatest trolley systems. We take a grand day out to look for what has become of it starting with surviving car 15 in the Pioneer Memorial Museum and ending at Trolley Square having dinner in an old trolley.
***************************************************************
While the Pacific Electric in Los Angeles, part of the Southern Pacific was much larger, most of that system was not trolley but interurban railroad. Utah Light and Railway, part of the Union Pacific, was 150 miles of city trolley system with almost 100 cars on the line every day. Salt Lake was considered the largest trolley system in the west. It connected to interurban systems with well over 300 miles of track extending from Idaho to Central Utah.
*************************************************************
Moreover the Salt Lake system was one of the oldest, opening in1873 and reaching it's massive size in 1910. Sadly little is left. A diner in the mountains, a horse drawn trolley in a museum, several power plants and substations and the amazing Trolley Square in downtown Salt Lake.
***********************************************************
A new light rail system has been built the includes one trolley line from Central Point to Sugar House. The bulk of the new system connects suburban areas to the city and airport.
