Favorite 45s: Pop Culture Graveyard Ep 111
This week I'm bringing you a heaping helping of 45s, which are some of my favorite singles in my collection. From punk to funk, and synth pop to Detroit rock, I've got you covered. Links below...

Modern Love (Live). Here is the live (remastered) version on the B-side of the Modern Love single taped on 1983's Serious Moonlight tour. One of the greatest songs ever written, it never fails to charm:
https://youtu.be/suAi560Lq5M
Erotic City by Prince, probably my favorite Prince song--which is saying something:
https://youtu.be/UiwrYOdaXUE
Suicide by The Damned. An outrageously great bass line paired with a fantastic guitar line, makes for one of the best punk songs to dance to:
https://youtu.be/RWl4lXhU7hI
Here is Complex by Gary Numan, which could be thought of as the theme song to the Pleasure Principle album. Stylistically it sounds like something off of Bowie's Low--which is high praise:
https://youtu.be/QKAb_J_NGyQ
And here's the Complex single's B-side, Bombers. Being that I can't find my single version online, here's the fantastic, original (guitar-heavy) version from Gary's Tubeway Army. Picture the song at half speed with keyboards instead of guitars:
https://youtu.be/GJLxnF_0bro
Better Off Dead by La Peste. I've always been a sucker for an "air-raid siren" guitar opening. Can u name a heavier punk song...? I'm waiting.:
https://youtu.be/xW7JuCetn_M
"Stonefree" by Supergrass; I think the boys do Jimi proud:
https://youtu.be/Hi4CUA93y_Y
Here is the weird, spooky, cool B-side called Odd? by Supergrass:
https://youtu.be/pzOlXB5uLBo
Breathless by X. I think Jerry Lee would approve, as this is a KILLER cover:
https://youtu.be/E1wbXCukaCs
Touch Me I'm Sick by Mudhoney. Perhaps the quintessential grunge song:
https://youtu.be/jm3UwFTBNys
'Merican by Descendants--the perfect antidote for 'Murica:
https://youtu.be/Ykcsn-A1-mI
Smells Like Teen Spirit (single version) by Nirvana. You may notice that both the intro and the guitar solo are a tad shorter on this 45 version:
https://youtu.be/lOPZZAPJfVg
Dreaming of Me by Depeche Mode:
https://youtu.be/7-kmNrg7GQI
Shake the Disease by Depeche Mode:
https://youtu.be/uFTkuysQvJQ
Head To Toe by The Breeders. This is as badass as the Breeders get:
https://youtu.be/KkNWao552-g
BONUS: The Breeders playing the song live:
https://youtu.be/DBeKp6ifLL0?t=23
Here's Office Talk by Klark Kent (AKA Stewart Copeland). I'm featuring the B-side because I consider this track to be the building blocks for The Other Way of Stopping, a track written by Stewart, and included on the Police album Zenyatta Mondatta:
https://youtu.be/4z18TX6J5No
Party Party by Elvis Costello and the Attractions. This captures Elvis in the prime of his voice, and I just love those ska horns. Watch this video and follow along with the fun lyrics!:
https://youtu.be/0fUgARkam68
No Way Out by D Generation. Check out that (La Peste-like) "air-raid siren" intro, in the form of Ricky's guitar, and how the track builds from the bottom up. And Jesse's vocals are just perfect. Such a killer song...
https://youtu.be/5owZfoGwdAs
City Slang by Sonic's Rendezvous Band, the last classic Detroit-rock song (Shut up, Nugent!). This is the mono mix, which even on a grainy 45 kicks like a mule:
https://youtu.be/9oSxHI9vMXs
Here's Holidays in the Sun by The Sex Pistols--talk about a brilliant punk song! I consider "A cheap holiday in other people's misery..." to be one of the greatest opening lines ever. I also think this is John's best vocal performance on the LP:
