20th Annual Symposium | 19 September 2019 | Bank of Namibia
The Bank of Namibia hosted its much-anticipated 20th Annual Symposium on Thursday, 19 September 2019 under the theme: Escaping the Middle – Income Trap: A perspective from Namibia.
The flagship event brought together over 230 experts; international and local policy makers, academics, members of the public and other relevant stakeholders who discussed – at length with a panel of invited discussants - on policymaking issues relevant to the theme within the Namibian context.
This year’s national and international invited speakers were Ms. Florette Nakusera (Bank of Namibia), Dr. Mathew Verghis (World Bank) and Dr. Jesus Felipe (Asian Development Bank) who delivered presentations on comparative analyses, international experiences and how Namibia could avoid the Middle-Income trap.
This year’s topic was motivated by the disappointing growth record of Namibia - since 2016 - that has given rise to the notion that Namibia might be in a middle-income trap; a term that captures a situation where a country is unable to move to higher levels of economic growth and further economic transformation.
The most important outcome of the discussions was that Namibia had not fallen into a middle-income trap and its growth and development prospects would depend, to a large extent, on how it enhances its drivers of long-term growth – overall levels of productivity, export capabilities and its ‘product space’.
