After finishing the Lollapalooza Tour in 1994, Nirvana would end its activities with the next album.
The band would be very worn out and Cobain needed rehab. He would be at the height of his addiction and his psychological problems, and he would have some overdoses between 1994 and 1995.

Kurt was reportedly hospitalized in early 1995 (as he did in real life, but in 1994), but he was to flee internment as he did in real life. He would be found under a bridge completely out of his mind. Cobain would spend 1995 resting and planning the release of Nirvana's next album.

The band would meet with Michael Stipe and Scott Litt to produce the album. They wanted to synthesize something like MTV Unplugged with a heavy sound.

The album title refers to intravenous therapy done at rehab and to the fact that the band would be releasing their fourth album.

The cover of the album would demonstrate Kurt's confusion, his suicidal side and his heavy intoxication.

IVY would be melancholic, poetic, very heavy but with the B Side well stuffed with acoustic songs, being a mirror to the extreme pain and difficulty that Kurt Cobain would be going through. The album would not have singles and the band would not record music videos, as did Pearl Jam at the time.

The last tour would be alongside Sepultura and Dead Kennedys, in which Nirvana planned in their last years.
