1) Core Theme - do you want to jump on trends? do you want to fade extreme moves? do you want to look for catalysts after earnings?..etc
2) Select your Markets. Are you going to focus on currencies? Or perhaps you want to specialise in tech stocks? The key is to narrow it down.
3) Decide on the timeframe. Work out how you'll going to do it.
4) Define the entry and exit criteria - arguably this is the most important element of the lot. When are you going to get in? And what will be the criteria for you to exit?
5) Evaluate the System. If you want to back-test it that's fine. If you want to forward test it that's okay as well.
6) Refine and adjust.
