UK Social Media Ban: Which Apps Are Blocked and When It Starts

Britain is about to cut under-16s off from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK will ban social media for children under 16, with regulations passing before Christmas 2026 and the restriction kicking in by early 2027. The ban covers Snapchat, Facebook, and X as well. Platforms must also prevent under-16s from livestreaming and block strangers from messaging them directly. Those restrictions will also default on for 17-year-olds to avoid a cliff edge at 16. WhatsApp and Signal are explicitly exempt from the ban. AI romantic companion chatbots will be restricted to users 18 and older. A late-night curfew for 16 and 17-year-olds is under discussion, with details expected in July. The legislation to enable the ban is already on the books. Whether platforms can verify age reliably enough to enforce it is the next fight.
