This is an excellent small scale demonstration that shows how solid fuels can be "pyrolysed" (decomposition by the application of heat). The solid fuel in the flask is wood. Remember this natural product has a calorific value of between 15 to 18 Mj/K,. In our modern built environment, our Petrochemical products have 2 to 3 and a half times the energy content!
