Pyrolysis of foam, laminated wood and ignition of gases

Reading Smoke Myths 101
White smoke in mostly moisture. Really????
Certainly, there is no doubt that virtually all solid materials will give off what appears to be “white smoke” as they are heated to 100 C (212 F). This steam will condense and cease to be visible.

However, this phase does not generally last for long. The next phase involves the chemical decomposition of the solid via “pyrolysis”. During this phase all of the volatile components are released, INCLUDING FLAMMABLE FUEL. What colour is the smoke at this stage? Black?? Grey?? NO it is white!!!!
Many thanks to Lars Angerstom (AKA The Swedish Fire Nerd) for filming this simple yet powerful demonstration.
