The design was presented to arms manufacturer FN Herstal in 1898, with production commencing the following year (then under the designation Modele 1899). In 1900, an improved design featuring primarily a shorter barrel and wider grips was introduced as the M1900. These designations were applied retroactively after FN began manufacture of other Browning pistol designs. Initially the M1900 was marketed as simply the "Pistolet Browning" (Browning Pistol). The pistol was adopted by the Belgian army in 1900 and then offered commercially, to be adopted by many European military and police forces.
Production ceased only 11 years later, with a total of about 700,000+ units having been produced.
The 1900-pattern FN-Brownings were distinguished by the barrel, which was firmly attached to the frame, and by the return spring above the barrel. The spring not only returned the slide to battery after firing, but powered the striker through a special intermediate lever. A safety catch lay on the left side of the frame, and a cocking indicator, part of the striker actuating lever, broke the line of sight until the gun was ready to fire. Some guns were made with elongated barrels, often for sale in markets such as Austria Hungary where barrel length restrictions were enforced.
The pistol was popular in China from its introduction through WW II and was often copied and used as the basis for other designs.State-run arsenals produced serialized production runs for warlord militias, and local craftsmen produced one-off handmade versions.
The North Korean Type 64 pistol [ja] is a copy of the M1900. Specimens examined by western authorities were marked with the date of 1964. A silenced variant was produced that featured a shortened slide to allow the threaded barrel to protrude far enough to attach the silencer.
The first commercial successful blowback pistol and the first model designed by John Moses Browning to be manufactured in quantity by Fabrique Nationale (FN) and also the first pistol chambered in 7,65 mm Browning (.32 Auto/.32 ACP) and also the first with a slide.
Eugen Schauman, a Finnish nationalist activist, assassinated the Governor-General Nikolay Bobrikov (the highest Russian authority in the Grand Duchy of Finland) with a 1900 Browning pistol on June 16, 1904, in Helsinki. The act was followed by spontaneous anti-Russian celebrations in the streets of Helsinki and after the 1917 independence Schauman was considered to be a national hero of Finland.
In the assassination of King Carlos I of Portugal and the Algarves and his heir-apparent, Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, in 1st February 1908 was used a FN 1900 by Alfredo Luís Costa that jumped on the carriage and fired two shots into the already lifeless body of the monarch because Manuel dos Reis da Silva Buíça had already killed the King with his first shot with a Winchester 1907 (caliber .351 Winchester Self-Loading).
An Jung-geun, a Korean-independence activist, assassinated the Resident-General of Korea Itō Hirobumi with this type of gun on October 26, 1909, in Harbin railway station.
The fourth President of Portugal, Sidónio Pais, was shot and fatally wounded with an FN 1900 at the Lisboa-Rossio Railway Station in Lisbon, Portugal on 14 December 1918. The act was carried out by the left-wing political activist José Júlio da Costa.
The Peruvian former president, Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro, was killed with the same model of gun, in 1933, by Abelardo Mendoza Leyva.
In August 1904 100,000 were produced, in 1909 500,00 and until July 1912 one million were produced by FN.
This model was patented in 21 march 1899 (Patent n.º 621747).
Designed by John Moses Browning (1855-1926).
