Creating Unintentional Patterns 👀 #shorts
We all have them! Those patterns that we just do—and our dogs pick up on. This has been one I’ve been noticing with Wrigley recently on our morning solo walks - especially now she has identified where we usually do cross the street.
It absolutely makes sense as a pattern she would put together, but not necessarily a safe one. So today we started working on re-associating that cue, and what I want her to do in the lead-up to it.
1. When I stop, I want her to look at me.
2. To start, that is the piece I’m focused on reinforcing heavily. I want her to have a clear understanding of what she should do instead, and am building duration into it from the start.
3. I’m making sure I’m marking and reinforcing MORE when cars pass by and she maintains that focus on me. To start, I’m giving her LOTS of treats to help set her up to succeed.
4. When I’m ready to cross, I wait for a moment when she is looking at me, say my “all done” cue, then we cross.
This is just a foundation-level step, and we’ll build from here once this becomes easy for her.
