Historic Ft. Smith & Hanging Judge Parker
Ft. Smith was founded in 1817 as a military post. It was abandoned by the army and then later they moved back in to help comply with the federal policy of removing the Cherokees and Choctaw Indians. It was occupied by the Confederates and then later the Union during the Civil War. One of the most famous people that is connected with Ft. Smith, Arkansas is Judge Isaac Parker. He was known as the Hanging Judge but in truth he was against Capitol Punishment. He only carried it out because it was the law and he believed in enforcing it. One other interesting fact about Parker was that he was in office as a Democrat and a Republican in offices such as Congressman and Judge. While a Judge at Ft. Smith he led the task of upholding jurisdiction within the Indian Territory thus establishing law and order.
