Communal tension has erupted in Dehradun after the murder of Vinod Kashyap, a local BJP leader, by a mob of Muslims over an irrigation dispute. The incident took place in Bairagiwala village under the Sahaspur police station area in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand on Saturday evening. Vinod Kashyap was the BJP’s OBC Morcha leader and was also a leader of the Bajrang Dal in the area.

The incident, which began over a minor water dispute in the fields, quickly escalated into violence, leaving Kashyap dead and three others seriously injured.⁠ According to police and eyewitness accounts, the clash started when Vinod Kashyap and his family members went to irrigate their fields using a tubewell. A group of Muslims led by one Imtiyaz arrived at the spot and attacked them with sticks, rods, hammers, and sharp weapons. Vinod Kashyap sustained severe head injuries from a hammer blow and succumbed to his wounds during treatment, while three of his relatives were critically injured and hospitalised.

CCTV footage of the attack has surfaced, showing the brutal assault. It can be seen that the clash took place in place of several children.

Bulldozer action was initiated on the properties of the main accused, Imtiyaz, in the presence of police and administration, drawing cheers and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans from Hindu activists present at the site.
