*Credits*
All songs composed by Ian Livingstone.
Many thanks to @13thVessel who contacted Ian Livingstone for the original audio files and created the first upload of the soundtrack 6 years ago. The lost Wonderland theme and the two unused tracks would not have been recovered without his work. Please check out his original video, which also has a link to the midi downloads and an exclusive composer Q&A: https://youtu.be/__ZbGHQslmw

*What’s different about this recording?*
This video is different from other uploads of the KH V CAST soundtrack because it uses the same soundfont as the mobile phones that the game ran on.

*How did you find the original soundfont?*
I started at a Verizon press release about Kingdom Hearts on V CAST, which named a few recommended phone models: the LG VX8000, Samsung SCH-A890, and Audiovox CDM-8940. This press release and contemporary new articles indicate that these were initially the only three EV-DO compatible phones, i.e. phones that supported the V CAST service.
The Legacy Portable Computing wiki, a database for obsolete mobile devices, affirms that all three of these phone models use the same sound engine, the Qualcomm CMX 4.1.
The ROMphonix preservation project has a directory of soundbanks from feature phones, including a .sf2 soundfont file from the CMX 4.1. This is the soundfont I used to play the KH V CAST midi files.
(As an aside, Qualcomm did make an official CMX Studio that supports audio playback; however, it has an error in detecting dynamics from midi files, meaning that all instrument channels are played at full volume. I used SynthFont to properly play back the midi files using the archived .sf2.)

*But this sounds _worse_ than the old version!*
Maybe.
The recordings featured on my original video and 13th Vessel’s channel were created with the default modern sound sets, and other soundtrack uploads use custom fan-made soundfonts. Naturally, these modern audiobanks are going to sound nicer than a sound chip from 2003, but I’d argue that the older quality is part of the charm.

*How do you know the song’s name?*
There are 2-3 different names for each track. In this case, Ian Livingstone’s original midi file uses the name “Swashbucklers Island v03.midi”, but the song goes unused in the final game. I went with the name “Swashbuckler’s Island” for consistency with the actual Swashbuckler’s Island theme.

*Wait, what even is Kingdom Hearts V CAST?*
Kingdom Hearts was a 2005 mobile game for Verizon’s V CAST service. This soundtrack restoration was created as part of a celebration of the game’s 20th anniversary. For more information, check out this video series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAPCJb1oI0KnWmokdVsP29jTEa9Ymbn1-
