EV Charging

When you own a Kia Electric Vehicle, it’s important to know how to charge your EV.
In this video, we are going to cover the different types of chargers …
Connecting and disconnecting to the vehicle charging port …
Charging indicators in the charging port … instrument cluster … and dash.
EV charging information on the infotainment system …
And, how to schedule charging via the infotainment system.
There are three types of EV chargers:
AC CHARGE Level 1 – is a PORTABLE CHARGER which uses standard 120-volt household electricity.
AC CHARGE Level 2 – is an AC Charger installed at your home or at most public charging stations.
DC CHARGE Level 3 – is a high-speed method of charging that’s used at select public charging stations.
No matter which type of charging you use, your EV’s battery will only store DC energy.
That’s why DC Charging stations can be faster – because the conversion from AC to DC happens at the station… not in the vehicle.
That’s also why there are different connectors for AC and DC charging.
AC CHARGE Level 2 typically takes approximately 3-8 hours to charge a standard battery to 100 percent…
And approximately 11 hours to charge an extended range battery.
Level 2 AC CHARGERS are used at many public charging stations.

Then press the SEARCH FOR CHARGING STATIONS icon.
The navigation system will display the nearest stations.
When searching for a recharging station, be aware of each type of station as indicted by its icon:
AC stations will take the longest to charge… while DC stations are faster.
Using a public charger is like going to a gas station. You simply pull in, pay – as needed – then plug in and charge! It’s that easy.
Also be aware that while charging, if you leave the air conditioning on, it will take longer to charge the vehicle.
And it’s normal for the battery’s cooling system to come on for longer charging sessions.
Now, we’ll discuss how to connect and charge your Kia EV.
If you’re in the vehicle, press the brake pedal, engage the parking brake, turn off the vehicle and make sure the doors are unlocked, which unlocks the charging door…
The charging door can also be released from inside the vehicle by pressing the CHARGING DOOR OPEN button.
Outside the vehicle, be aware that the location of the charging door varies from vehicle to vehicle, as well as where to press on the lid to open it, if needed.
If you are at a DC CHARGE station, remove the secondary charging inlet cover.
Make sure there is no dust or debris inside the charging connector or the charging inlet.
If you are at an AC CHARGE station, leave the secondary charging inlet cover in place.
Plug the charger into the charging inlet until you hear a click.

If equipped, you can monitor the charge level via the gauge that’s inside the charging door. The indicator lamp blinks according to each level of the battery.
If the charging fails, the indicator lamp blinks in red.
A High Voltage Indicator Light is located on top of the instrument panel and is also illuminated while the vehicle is charging.
When the high voltage battery is fully charged, the indicator light turns off.
You can also monitor the charging rate via the infotainment screen.
When charging is complete, make sure the doors are unlocked, then remove the charging connector while pressing the release button.
For DC charging, replace the charging inlet cover … and close the charging door.
That’s it – you’re done!
Select Kia EVs feature a LOCKING CHARGING CABLE feature to help prevent charging cable theft.
Here’s how it works:
From the infotainment system screen, select SETUP …
VEHICLE …
ECO VEHICLE …
Then CHARGING CONNECTOR LOCK.
Then select your preferred mode:
ALWAYS LOCK MODE means the connector stays locked until the doors are unlocked by the driver.
If you unlock the doors and DO NOT disconnect the charging cable within 15 seconds, then the connector will automatically relock.
LOCK WHILE CHARGING MODE will unlock when charging is complete. This is useful at public charging stations, as it allows others to use the charger once your charging is complete.
And DO NOT LOCK MODE leaves the connector unlocked at all times.
You can also schedule when you want your Kia EV to charge via the infotainment system or the Kia Access App.
Scheduled charging can only be done using Level 1 or Level 2 AC CHARGE.
From the infotainment system, select EV on the home screen …
Then select NEXT DEPARTURE and schedule your desired departure time …
SCHEDULED CHARGING can only be scheduled after NEXT DEPARTURE time has been set.
Now, select SCHEDULED CHARGING AND TARGET TEMPERATURE.
At this screen, you can set the time when you want to charge your EV and the climate control temperature.
Next, select OFF-PEAK HOURS SETTINGS, then set your preferred START and END charging times.
Press OK to save.
