Happy Thursday, which means you know we’ve got to talk about the weekly jobs report from our friends over at the Department of Labor.

This week’s report once again shows not the best news for the economy, as the actual unemployment figures were higher than last week, and underperformed the estimates of those DOW Jones economists.

The weekly report showed that 885,000 Americans filed their first time unemployment claims, which is slightly higher than the previous week’s 862,000 initial claims.

These numbers are also way higher than the 808,000 initial claims predicted by economists, and is the highest amount of initial claims since September 5th.

Lindsey Piegza, chief economist at Stifel, explained the report: “really highlights the fragility of the labor market, particularly now as the second resurgence [is] leading to further business closures and additional job losses.”

With Congress just days away from their deadline to fund themselves, these numbers continue to display the need for them to include extended enhanced unemployment benefits in any disaster relief bill.

Colorado recently announced that they have completed their much needed upgrade of the outdated unemployment system in the Centennial State.

Joe Barela, executive director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, explained: “In March, we were already training on the new system. We were ready to go.”

Now, the time has come to implement the new unemployment system, and Barela stated: “This will be the first time that we’re able to introduce a system that is agile, that is point-in-time, with better access for customers.”

Finally, we’re literally just 1 day away from the deadline for Congress to pass their own funding CR bill, and it’s still looking likely that we’ll see extended enhanced unemployment benefits included in the new stimulus package.

The price tag of the stimulus bill has risen to $900 billion to include more stimulus checks, and I’m hearing that more extended enhanced unemployment benefits, to the tune of $300 weekly, are still a top priority in the disaster relief package.

From what I’ve been hearing, we’re going to get 14 weeks of $300 payments, and the funds will not be retroactive or disbursed in a lump sum payment.

Much like both the CARES Act and the LWA unemployment programs, it’s likely that this new piece of legislation could take weeks, or even months, for funds to hit bank accounts across America.

We need to finally get our long-overdue extended enhanced unemployment benefits, to give us some hope for the new year, and to make the holidays a happy time for everyone once again.

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, get your application into your state’s program before it’s too late.

Simply visit your state’s PUA or UI website, hand over your employment history and supporting documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there.
