Script to Screen: Little Miss Sunshine (2006) Olive's Opening Scene

Hola! Olive’s introduction in the opening scene of “Little Miss Sunshine” (2007), written by Michael Arndt, tells us everything we need to know about her character. It’s a quick read - about half of a page, and although there is no dialogue, the audience knows exactly what she wants. She mimics the models - she wants to be just like them. She wants to be on stage. She dreams of winning a beauty pageant. She’s a dreamer, which makes her instantly relatable. The script actually starts out with the pageant and then shows us Olive watching it on TV. But the film itself brought us up close and personal with Olive first - we see her eyes first and then we catch glimpses of the pageant show she’s watching. It’s a great opener, and it instantly hooks you right into the rest of the opening sequence (where we see the lives of the other main characters: their wants, goals, contentment, and bitterness) and hooks you into the rest of the film.
