Genre: Screenwriting Definition

Hola! Another video in the A-to-Z Screenwriting Terminology series, where we review basic screenwriting terms. Next up: Genre. What is it and what is an example of the term?

This quick overview breaks down the definition of genre with six examples, though there are plenty more, and even more-so when you include sub-genres and hybrids: Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Romance, and Sci-fi, followed by examples of films within these genres. Genres are, of course, nuanced, and some of these examples actually have overlapping genres (Little Miss Sunshine is both a Drama and a Comedy, Titanic is also a Romance film, etc.).

Genre: A story's category defined by a set of traits that guide audience expectations.
