Friends and colleagues remember her as compassionate, committed, and someone who always put others before herself. But on that August night, while working alone, she was attacked and killed by 18-year-old Djordje Wilms, a resident of the institution.
The young man, himself an immigrant born in Germany with roots in Eastern Europe, has been charged with both murder and terrorism. During police questioning, he admitted his actions were politically motivated, openly declaring his hatred of Muslims and revealing that he had intended to attack others as well.
