Human Trafficking & The Muslim Community | Mariyam Zaidi

Human trafficking has made its way into Canadian society and is of increasing concern to Muslim communities. Mariyam Zaidi is a registered social worker, psychotherapist and Director of Programs and Services at Sakeenah. She speaks with Safiyyah Ally about her experience working with those who have been victimized and gives insight into how we can contribute to the fight against sex trafficking.

Many young women and men are currently living in abusive and traumatic situations. Often, they are lured by deceptive means into the sex trade. Mariyam tells us how communities can prevent human trafficking and heal by gaining knowledge and recognizing the signs in young people. She explains how we can have challenging conversations with our children about the dangers of human trafficking and support those who have been trafficked without ignorance or judgment. Everyone, including Muslims, should learn and be alert to this hidden danger facing young people. Knowledge is the best weapon against traffickers and the best treatment for those who have already been directly impacted in the Muslim community.
