Greg Alba, John Humphrey & Michael Tessler react to the Season 1 Finale of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — Episode 6, “The People of Ashford.” In the emotional aftermath of the brutal Trial of Seven, Ser Duncan the Tall is left grappling with survivor’s guilt following Lord Baelor Targaryen’s tragic death. The episode slows the battlefield spectacle in favor of powerful character reflection, as Dunk questions his worth in a realm where the noblest men fall and flawed ones endure.

When Prince Maekar Targaryen summons Dunk, he offers a compromise: come to Summerhall and formally train young Aegon “Egg” Targaryen in the safety of courtly life. But true to the lessons of his late master Ser Arlen of Pennytree, Dunk proposes raising Egg on the road — to learn honor not from castles, but from the people of Westeros. Meanwhile, Egg wrestles with his anger toward his brother Aerion “Brightflame,” and Ser Lyonel Baratheon extends Dunk an offer of service. Ser Raymun Fossoway’s heartwarming reassurance and a poignant flashback to Dunk’s early days further underscore the episode’s themes of legacy, mentorship, and chosen destiny. In a stirring final act, Egg races to rejoin Dunk with word that Maekar has relented — allowing the pair to ride out together at last. A charmingly self-aware exchange about whether Westeros holds seven or nine kingdoms culminates in a revised title card: “A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms.” But a tense mid-credits scene reveals Maekar never truly granted permission, as the Targaryen forces set out in pursuit — raising the stakes for Season 2.
The series stars Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) as Ser Duncan the Tall, bringing warmth and quiet strength to the hedge knight torn between honor and self-doubt, and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) as Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, whose royal lineage clashes with his desire for humility and growth. Bertie Carvel (The Crown, Doctor Foster) portrays Prince Baelor Targaryen, while Sam Spruell (Fargo, The Hurt Locker) embodies the stern and calculating Prince Maekar. The ensemble continues to expand George R.R. Martin’s Westeros with political intrigue, moral complexity, and deeply personal stakes that echo the spirit of Game of Thrones while carving out its own identity.
