Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau react to and review The New Mutants (2020), the X-Men spinoff that blends superhero storytelling with psychological horror for a darker, more contained take on Marvel’s mutant universe.
Directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars, The Stand), the film follows a group of young mutants held in a mysterious facility where they must confront both their powers and their deepest fears. Blu Hunt (Another Life) stars as Dani Moonstar / Mirage, a girl whose arrival triggers terrifying manifestations tied to trauma. She’s joined by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, The Falling) as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Furiosa) as the fan-favorite Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Shut In) as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why, Trinkets) as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot.
The film is known for its eerie tone and standout horror-inspired sequences, including the haunting Slender Man-like Smiling Men, Illyana’s stepping discs and demon companion Lockheed, and the slow unraveling of the facility’s true purpose under Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga — I Am Legend, Queen of the South). The story builds toward a climactic confrontation where Dani embraces her powers, facing the monstrous Demon Bear in a visually striking finale.
With its mix of superhero origins and horror elements, The New Mutants offers a unique entry in the X-Men franchise, focusing more on character psychology and fear than traditional blockbuster spectacle.
